I want to write but where do I start?
|
This section of our site was borne out our eldest daughter’s interest in wanting to write. Don’t get me wrong, if I ask her to write in her journal or to write an essay then I get the same moans and groans with eye rolling that many of you probably suffer through on a regular basis. You see my dear daughter sees no excitement or adventure in the everyday writing that is expected of your average 12yo school child. She has always loved to read, and if you have read all there is about us you will know that she basically taught herself to read.
Like her love of reading she has also loved to tell stories, and at an early age while still in public school had aspirations of becoming a writer illustrator. Now like most parents I encouraged her in her dreams, unfortunately some at the school she was attending did not. She was told that her dreams were unrealistic, that it was extremely difficult to become a writer and that she couldn’t be an illustrator as well as a writer. These criticisms’ put her dreams on the backburner, and contributed to her dislike of school. It is now a few years later and we having been homeschooling her for just over a year now and that spark has reignited. I was told that she plans to write a novel, promptly followed by being handed four double sided A4 pages of a rudimentary storyline. You can imagine my surprise when after reading the pages that were so unexpectedly handed to me I found myself wanting to read more. While the story was very obviously still extremely raw (she hadn’t even re-read her work), I was extremely shocked (and pleased) with the sheer vibrancy of these characters and story that were just starting to emerge. I quickly complemented her and asked if she had any more for me to read, Followed by a quick reply from her “I don’t know what to do now; I don’t know where to start”. This page is my answer to my very creative daughter. |

I also made up some planning sheets to make it easier for her to keep track of what she has going on, these are also available for FREE download below.
