Phonemic Awareness: Learning how to read!

When teaching kids how to read, we need to remember that we’ve got to go back to the basics. The first step to learning how to read is letter recognition and sound development. After students have mastered their sounds, we move on to Concepts About Print. Beginning readers must start to recognize that each letter makes a sound and when you put these sounds together they make words. This is a GREAT activity for new readers to start to recognize that when letters are chunked together and separated by spaces, they make a word, which has a meaning! You can do this activity with older kids, which helps with comprehension skills and building their site words. Happy Reading!
